Use of DataThe Baltimore Afro-American, The Afro, or Afro News is a weekly broadsheet published in Baltimore, Maryland. The paper began in 1889 as the Home Protector by Reverend William Alexander. Investors took over in 1892, calling it the Afro-American. Eventually, it was taken over by John H. Murphy, Sr. who had been in charge of printing the paper and his family still runs the paper today. It is the flagship newspaper of the Afro-American chain and the oldest operating African American owned US newspaper.
