Use of DataThe Austin Chronicle is an independent alternative newsweekly published in Austin, Texas, by the Austin Chronicle Corporation. Founded in 1981, The Chronical covers Austin's arts and cultural scenes including live music, entertainment venues, performing arts, restaurants, film, and outdoor activities.
The paper is a profit-oriented business that generates income from advertisements. It endorses electoral candidates and its reporting team check official sources.
The paper is distributed through free news-stands and at local restaurants and coffee houses.
Current publisher Nick Barbaro and Louis Black, an editor during the paper’s beginning, led a group of journalists that started the paper. Louis Black, a co-founder of The Austin Chronicle, served as its editor until 2016 and retired from the Chronicle in 2017.
Barbaro is the sole owner of The Austin Chronicle and its current publisher. Kimberly Jones is the editor.
The Chronicle sponsors annual events like the South by Southwest Festival (which Barbaro and Black, with others, established, though the SXSW Festival operates as a separate company), the annual Austin Music Awards, and The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival. Special annual issues include Best of Austin, the First Plates Restaurant Awards, and the Austin Music Awards.
The Chronicle is part of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia, and publishes content reminiscent of the 1960s counterculture.
