Thaiwater.net National Hydroinformatics and Climate Data Center (NHC)

Overview

Thaiwater.net is the public-facing portal of the National Hydroinformatics and Climate Data Center (NHC), developed and operated by the Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII) of Thailand, a public organization under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation. The platform integrates water and weather data from dozens of government agencies to provide a centralized source of hydrological and meteorological information for Thailand.

History and Founding

The origins of Thaiwater.net trace back to 1998, when a project was initiated to integrate water information from five agencies across the Chao Phraya river basin. This system was completed in 2002 and was used to support national water management decisions. The Royal Decree of March 22, 2019 formally established the Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII) as a public organization. The NHC was formally established in 2012, when HAII (now HII) integrated data from 12 water- and weather-related agencies. By 2015, the data network had expanded to 34 agencies and 388 datasets. Following severe flooding in Thailand in 2011, the NHC became an essential tool for national disaster preparedness and response, eventually integrating data from over 45 government agencies.

Collections and Data Holdings

NHC integrates area-based, statistical, and situational data from over 45 Thai government agencies. Data categories include rainfall records, automated telemetry station readings, water levels, reservoir capacity, dam operation data, storm tracking, satellite imagery, 7-day rainfall prediction models, and historical climate records. The platform serves government planners, disaster response agencies, provincial governments, and the general public.
