The University of Texas at Austin is a public research university in Austin, Texas, and the flagship institution of the University of Texas System.
The School of Journalism and Media is part of the Moody College of Communication, named in 2013 after a $50 million gift from the Moody Foundation of Galveston. UT Austin's journalism program began in 1914 as the Department of Journalism, later renamed the School of Journalism, growing out of the Department of Public Speaking established in 1899. The school is housed in the G.B. Dealey Center for New Media, renamed in 2021 in honor of newspaper publisher George Bannerman Dealey, which also houses public radio stations KUT and KUTX.
The University of Texas was authorized by the Texas Constitution of 1876 and located by popular vote in Austin on 6 September 1881. The cornerstone of the university's Main Building was laid on 17 November 1882, and the university formally opened on 15 September 1883 with 221 students and eight faculty members.
