The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is a public land-grant research university in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee System.
The School of Journalism and Media, part of the College of Communication and Information, offers a Bachelor of Science in Communication in Journalism and Media with concentrations in creative media, news and sports communication. The school is located in the Communication and Information Building and gives students access to in-house outlets including The Daily Beacon, WUTK-FM and WUOT-FM.
The University of Tennessee was chartered on 10 September 1794, two years before Tennessee achieved statehood, as Blount College, named for territorial governor William Blount. The institution was renamed East Tennessee College in 1807, closed following the death of its first president in 1809 and reopened in 1820. It was renamed East Tennessee University in 1840, received land-grant status in 1869, and was renamed the University of Tennessee in 1879.
