The National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan (Tatarstan Respublikasy Milli kitapxanäse; Russian: Национальная библиотека Республики Татарстан) is the main state book depository in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation, serving as the center for the preservation and dissemination of Tatar culture and national publications. It is located in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, at 86 Pushkin Street.
The library was originally founded on January 10, 1865, as the Kazan city public library, based on a collection of 1,908 volumes (903 titles) donated to the city by the son of local bibliophile Ivan Vtorov. It grew steadily through the Soviet era. Its current home is a landmark building originally constructed in 1987–1988 as the Kazan branch of the Lenin Central Museum, clad in Armenian tufa stone and designed to evoke a waving Soviet flag. After the collapse of the USSR, the building housed the National Cultural Centre Kazan. In late 2020, the building was renovated and formally opened as the National Library of the Republic of Tatarstan, becoming Tatarstan's largest library. The renovation was undertaken by the XOPA architecture bureau and transformed the interior into a vibrant public space while preserving the building's architectural heritage.
The library holds over 3.3 million documents, including publications in Russian and the Tatar language, as well as foreign-language materials. The collection includes more than 100,000 documents in Tatar and another 100,000 in foreign languages. A notable light-kinetic installation in the central space is dedicated to the history of Tatar writing and comprises 278 letters from five different alphabets historically used by the Tatar people. The library maintains a searchable electronic catalog.
Beyond library collections, the institution hosts lectures, concerts, workshops, exhibitions, and performances on its MOÑ theatre stage, serving as a hub for Kazan's intellectual and creative communities. The building offers panoramic views of the city from the surrounding hillside.
