Overview

The National Library of Tajikistan (KMT; Tajik: Китобхонаи миллии Тоҷикистон; Russian: Национальная библиотека Таджикистана) is the main library of Tajikistan, located in Dushanbe. It serves as the country's primary repository of cultural heritage and the center for the preservation and dissemination of Tajik literature and international publications.

History

The library's origins trace to 1933, when it was established as Dushanbe's state public library. In 1934 it was named after the celebrated Persian poet Abulqosim Firdavsi (Ferdowsi) in honor of the millennium of his birth. In 1993 the library was elevated to national status. A purpose-built, nine-story building designed in the form of an open book was inaugurated on March 20, 2012, in the presence of President Emomali Rahmon. At 45,000 square meters and 52 meters in height, the building is the largest library in Central Asia.

Collections and Holdings

The library's collection exceeds six million items, including books in Tajik, Russian, and foreign languages, newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, and electronic materials. The institution places special emphasis on works related to the Tajik people and Tajik-authored international publications, specializing in classical Tajik literary heritage, including works attributed to Firdavsi. Ancient manuscripts and rare books are displayed in dedicated exhibition halls.

Facilities

The building features 25 reading rooms with 274 automated workstations, three exhibition halls, nine conference and symposium halls with a total seating capacity of 1,100, a café, and specialized cultural centers including Korean, Chinese, and Russian language resources. Twenty-two busts of notable historical figures from the region are installed near the central facade.

Access

Access is free to Tajik citizens with a passport. Foreign visitors may access the building, typically accompanied by a guide. Membership registration is required for reading room access.
