Stony Brook University is a public research university in Stony Brook, New York, and one of two flagship institutions of the State University of New York (SUNY) system.
The School of Communication and Journalism was founded in 2006 as the Stony Brook School of Journalism and was renamed the School of Communication and Journalism in 2021. It offers a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication, a Master of Science in Journalism and a Master of Science in Science Communication. The school houses the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, established in 2009 in partnership with Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and renamed for actor and science communication advocate Alan Alda in 2013, along with the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting and the Center for News Literacy.
Stony Brook University was established in 1957 as the State University College on Long Island, opening on the grounds of the Coe family's Planting Fields estate in Oyster Bay, New York, with 148 students. The institution moved to its current Stony Brook campus, on land donated by philanthropist Ward Melville, in 1962. It was elected to the Association of American Universities in 2001.
