Stats NZ Tatauranga Aotearoa is New Zealand's official national statistics agency, responsible for collecting, processing, and publishing data about New Zealand's people, economy, and environment. Its data tools—formerly NZ.Stat and now the successor Aotearoa Data Explorer (ADE)—provide free public access to New Zealand's official statistical datasets.
Stats NZ was established as the Department of Statistics under the Statistics Act 1975 and has operated as New Zealand's national statistical office. The NZ.Stat data tool was an online platform that allowed users to create custom tables and download data from Stats NZ's statistical collections. On 13 September 2024, NZ.Stat was retired and replaced by the Aotearoa Data Explorer (ADE), accessible at explore.data.stats.govt.nz. ADE is an upgraded version of the NZ.Stat platform, developed by the Statistical Information System Collaboration Community (SIS-CC) and does not collect personal information. A companion tool, Infoshare, provided access to economic time-series data.
Stats NZ collects data through censuses and surveys on topics including population, health, education, the economy, business, the labour market, housing, and the environment. Statistical products range from Census data and the Household Labour Force Survey to time series on prices and migration. The agency also maintains the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI), a large linked longitudinal dataset used for policy research.
All statistical data published by Stats NZ is freely available through the Aotearoa Data Explorer and other tools. Researchers can also apply for access to microdata through Stats NZ's data lab. The agency operates an Information Centre (phone: 0508 525 525) and international line (+64 4 931 4600).
