Overview

The State Statistics Service of Ukraine (SSSU; Ukrainian: Державна служба статистики України, Держстат) is the central executive body responsible for the collection, processing, and dissemination of official national statistics in Ukraine. It operates under the direction of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine via the Ministry of Economic Development. The official statistics portal provides open access to a wide range of socioeconomic data about Ukraine.

History and Founding

Statistical activity in Ukraine traces back to 1920 within the Soviet administrative structure. The modern independent SSSU was established in 1990 following Ukraine's transition toward independence, operating from its headquarters at Shota Rustaveli Street 3 in Kyiv. The official statistics website, ukrstat.gov.ua, serves as the main platform for disseminating official data.

Collections and Data

The SSSU produces statistics across a broad spectrum of topics including GDP and national accounts, population and demographics, labor markets, industry, agriculture, trade, prices, energy, construction, transport, education, health care, and social protection. The portal provides access to statistical yearbooks, information releases, datasets, and methodological documentation. Since January 2023, operations are governed by the new Law of Ukraine on Official Statistics.

Notable Activities

The SSSU has collaborated with international organizations including the IMF and Eurostat to align Ukrainian statistics with international standards. Due to Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, statistical data from 2014 onwards excludes the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea, Sevastopol, and parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The SSSU has also implemented an online respondent reporting system used by approximately 170,000 respondents.
