The Archivio di Stato di Venezia (State Archives of Venice) is one of the world's most significant repositories of historical documents, housed in the former Franciscan monastery of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in the San Polo district of Venice, Italy. The archive preserves the records of the Republic of Venice from the 9th century to 1797, as well as French and Austrian occupation records (1797–1866) and Italian state records from 1866 onward. The archive contains over 70–80 kilometers of shelving.
The archive was established in 1815 following the Austrian return to Venice, under the name Archivio generale veneto. Between 1817 and 1822, the records of the Venetian Republic—originally dispersed across the Doge's Palace, the Procuratie, and the Rialto district—were consolidated into the former Frari monastery. The first director, Chiodo, successfully resisted attempts to transfer the most significant collections to Vienna, securing them in Venice. In 1875, the archive expanded to incorporate the former monastery of Ss. Trinità and S. Antonio. A secondary location on the Giudecca island (Fondamenta della Croce 17), in a former Benedictine convent, was established in the 1960s to accommodate additional holdings.
The archive's collections span over a millennium, from isolated pre-976 documents to 20th-century Italian state records. Key holdings include: the complete records of the Venetian Republic (697–1797), covering the Doge, the Senate, the Council of Ten, diplomatic correspondence, trade records, and judicial proceedings; notarial archives; records of guilds, Scuole Grandi and piccole, and brotherhoods; ecclesiastical corporate records; and family and individual archives. Holdings also include Holocaust-era documentation and post-unification records of state peripheral offices. An online database of conscription lists (leva.archiviodistatovenezia.it) is available for genealogical research.
The study room is open Monday through Wednesday, 08:30–18:00, and Thursday through Friday, 08:30–14:00. The archive is currently undergoing structural renovation work affecting access arrangements; researchers are advised to verify current conditions before visiting. Access is free; guided tours may require advance booking.
