The Arhiv Srbije (State Archives of Serbia) is the national archival institution of the Republic of Serbia, responsible for protecting, preserving, and providing access to the most historically significant archival materials in Serbia. Affiliated with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, it operates from two locations in Belgrade: the main reading room at Karnegijeva 2, and a storage facility at Bulevar mladih 5 in the Železnik district.
The State Archives of Serbia was founded in 1900, making it one of the oldest archival institutions in the Balkans. Over more than a century, it has evolved from a state records repository into the apex institution of Serbia's archival network, overseeing a nationwide system of regional and local archives.
The archive holds the most significant historical records of the Serbian state from the 19th century to the present. Holdings span government and administrative records of the Principality, Kingdom, and later Republic of Serbia, including documents from the Serbian uprisings, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, World War II occupation records, and post-war socialist governance. The archive also holds personal estates, family archives, and collections related to Serbian cultural and intellectual life.
The archive holds government records relating to media regulation, censorship, and press policy across different political periods in Serbian history, providing significant resources for historians of journalism and media in the Balkans.
The main reading room (Karnegijeva) is open Monday through Friday, 08:00–19:00, and Saturday, 08:00–13:00. The Železnik location is open Monday through Friday, 08:00–14:00. Researchers must register and present identification.
