The Salzburger Landesarchiv (State Archives of Salzburg) is the official provincial archive of the Austrian federal state of Salzburg. Located at Michael-Pacher-Straße 40 in the Herrnau district of Salzburg-Süd, the archive preserves over 1,000 years of the region's history and serves as the central information resource on Salzburg's regional history.
The archive's history extends more than 1,200 years, rooted in the documentary archive of the Salzburg archbishops, which was housed in the archiepiscopal residence since the early Middle Ages. The archive traces its modern founding to 1875, when a permanent central office was established following the Zentralregistratur's creation after Salzburg's incorporation into Austria. The current building at Michael-Pacher-Straße 40, designed by architects Fritz Kohlbacher and Hans Laimer, opened on December 9, 1970. The building was renovated between 1991 and 1995 and again in 2012 and 2014. Branch offices include the Bezirksarchiv Pinzgau in Zell am See (since 1982) and the Bezirksarchiv Pongau in Werfen (since 1999). In 2009, Director Fritz Koller successfully arranged the digitization of 19,000 medieval documents and negotiated the return of Salzburg archival materials from Vienna and Munich.
The archive's holdings span more than 1,000 years and include approximately 14,000 linear meters of archival material. Collections are divided into the Historisches Archiv (until c.1850), the Zentralregistratur (from c.1850), special collections, and personal estates. The archive holds original documents (Urkunden) from around 1130, land surveys since 1825, maps and plans, photographs, private estates, and a placard collection. Records of the Nazi period include Reichsstatthalter files (1938–1945). An extensive historical library and an official library are maintained on-site.
A visit requires advance appointment by telephone (+43 662 8042-4530). The reading room is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 08:30–12:00 and 13:00–16:00; Wednesday and Friday, 08:30–12:00. All holdings are subject to a 30-year access restriction, with extended periods for sensitive personal data.
