The Staatsarchiv Basel-Stadt (State Archives of the Canton of Basel-City) is the official cantonal archive of the Swiss half-canton of Basel-Stadt. Located at Martinsgasse 2 in the heart of Basel, it serves as the primary repository for the historical, legal, and administrative records of the city and canton.
The oldest document held in the archives, a monastery charter, dates to 1098, though the city archive was destroyed in the Basel earthquake of 1356. Systematic administrative record-keeping and preservation resumed following that disaster. The archive traces its formal institutional history from at least 1832, when it began operating as a modern cantonal archive under the designation that continues today. The current building on Martinsgasse opened to the public following renovations and relocations over the centuries.
The Staatsarchiv Basel-Stadt holds more than 24 linear kilometers of archival material, encompassing written documents, photographs, maps, plans, films, and audio recordings from both governmental and private sources. Holdings include approximately 400 private estates (Nachlässe), 250,000 photographs, 40,000 maps and plans, and 330 linear meters of official publications. The archive also maintains 550 linear meters of bound volumes and 70 linear meters of newspaper clippings. Key collection groups include Basiliensia, Alsatica, and Badensia, along with funeral orations (Leichenreden), seals, and coats of arms. The municipal records collection dates from the 13th to the 18th century. Notably, the archive holds official documents documenting the coexistence of Jewish and Christian communities in Basel, including material dating to the 18th century.
The archives contain approximately 420,000 pages of written documents available online through the archive's catalogue. Selected photographic and film documents are also accessible digitally. The archive is a member of Memoriav, the Swiss association for the preservation of audiovisual heritage, reflecting the significance of its audiovisual collections.
The reading room is open Tuesday through Friday, 09:00–18:00. No pre-registration is required for general access, though building plans require advance appointment and ordering. The online archive catalogue (query.staatsarchiv.bs.ch) provides search tools and access to digitized materials. Short queries can be submitted by mail, email, or phone free of charge.
Approximately 30 professional archivists ensure the long-term preservation of the collections and provide public access and research support. The archive also engages in digital archiving initiatives, with an active presence on GitHub for linked open data (LOD) pipeline development.
