The Stanford University Archives is the official institutional repository of Stanford University, part of Stanford University Libraries (SUL). It functions as Stanford's institutional memory, collecting and preserving records with enduring historical value that document the university's administration, governance, faculty research and teaching, student life, alumni activities, and relationships with the broader community. The Archives is housed in Green Library at 557 Escondido Mall, Stanford, California.
The Archives holds more than six miles of archival records, manuscripts, photographs, maps and architectural drawings, posters, books, serials, and audiovisual materials, as well as over 50 terabytes of electronic records. Holdings span thousands of collections documenting Stanford's history from its founding in 1885 through the present day. Notable collection areas include records of Stanford administration and governance, papers of prominent faculty, campus organisation records, materials documenting Silicon Valley's development, and collections related to diversity and inclusion at the university.
The University Archives holds materials relating to Stanford's journalism programmes and alumni, as well as documentation of the university's communications and public affairs activities. Within the broader Stanford University Libraries system, the Hoover Institution Library and Archives holds extensive primary source materials relevant to twentieth-century media history, international affairs, and political journalism.
Access is by appointment and registration is required. The Archives supports research and teaching by Stanford faculty, students, and external researchers. Note that as of 2024–2026, the Department of Special Collections and University Archives is undertaking a major collection move; some University Archives collections may be temporarily unavailable. Researchers are advised to contact Special Collections in advance of a planned visit.
