The Department of National Archives of Sri Lanka was established in 1947, making it one of the oldest archival institutions in South Asia. It is affiliated with the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs of Sri Lanka and serves as the official custodian of the nation's public records and documentary heritage.
The Department holds a comprehensive collection of Sri Lankan government records, including colonial-era administrative documents, legislative records, court papers, and post-independence state records. The archives preserves materials in a variety of formats including paper documents, maps, photographs, and microfilm. Holdings trace the country's administrative history from the Dutch and British colonial periods through independence and beyond.
The Department holds government-issued records relating to the press, broadcasting, and media regulation in Sri Lanka. These include colonial and post-independence records relevant to the history of journalism and communications policy in the country.
The Department is open to researchers Monday through Friday during standard government hours (8:30 am to 4:15 pm), with reading room hours that may vary. The research room is located at the Colombo 07 address. Advance enquiry is recommended for specific collections.
