Calgary, Alberta, Canada
The Sprawl is an independent, crowdfunded news outlet based in Calgary, Alberta, focused on in-depth, slow journalism about municipal issues. Its municipal podcast, Sprawlcast, is produced in collaboration with University of Calgary student radio station CJSW 90.9 FM.
The Sprawl was launched September 18, 2017, by journalist Jeremy Klaszus as a temporary "pop-up journalism" project covering that year's Calgary municipal election, initially publishing on Facebook, Twitter and Medium. In April 2018, The Sprawl was selected for the inaugural Digital News Innovation Challenge, a program run by Facebook, the DMZ and Toronto Metropolitan University's journalism school, receiving $100,000 plus $50,000 in Facebook marketing support, which funded the outlet's website. The Sprawl won general excellence in the small division at the 2019 Digital Publishing Awards and was named Alberta Magazine of the Year by the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association in 2023. It is a founding member of Press Forward, a Canadian association of independent media publications, and a partner publisher in the Indiegraf news startup network.
