The Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE) was founded in 1711 by King Philip V as the Royal Library (Real Biblioteca), opening to the public in March 1712. Its founding charter required printers to submit a copy of every book printed in Spain to the library—a forerunner of the modern legal deposit requirement. In 1836, the Crown transferred the library to the Ministry of Governance and it was renamed the National Library. In 1837, women were permitted access for the first time following a petition by writer Antonia Gutiérrez. The BNE's main building on the Paseo de Recoletos in Madrid was commissioned by Queen Isabel II in 1865 and completed in 1892 in the neoclassical style. Since 1990, the BNE has been an autonomous agency attached to the Ministry of Culture.
The BNE holds approximately 35 million items, making it one of the largest libraries in the world. Collections include books, manuscripts, maps, prints, drawings, photographs, sound recordings, music scores, and digital materials. The BNE houses the largest manuscript collection in Spain and the Hispanic world, with notable holdings including works by Cervantes, Goya's personal sketches, medieval manuscripts, and rare incunabula. As the national legal deposit library, it receives a copy of every work published in Spain. A secondary facility in Alcalá de Henares houses additional storage and preservation operations. The BNE has also developed Biblioteca Digital Hispánica, an online platform providing free access to digitised heritage materials.
The BNE's Hemeroteca Digital (Digital Newspaper Library) is a major online resource providing access to a large archive of historical newspapers from Spain and Latin America. The library holds comprehensive collections of Spanish periodicals and newspapers, including the earliest surviving Spanish newspapers. In 1986, Spain's main bibliographic institutions—including the former National Newspaper Library (Hemeroteca Nacional)—were integrated with the BNE, substantially expanding its press holdings.
Access to the BNE's reading rooms requires a reader's or researcher's card. The main building in Madrid is open Monday through Friday, with hours varying by department. The Alcalá de Henares facility provides additional storage and conservation services. The BNE's online catalogue and Biblioteca Digital Hispánica allow remote access to digitised materials. The BNE also maintains the Museo de la Biblioteca Nacional, an on-site museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions on the history of books and documentary heritage, which was relaunched in February 2024.
