Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a public research university in Carbondale, Illinois, and the flagship campus of the Southern Illinois University System.
Journalism instruction is housed in the School of Journalism and Advertising, part of the College of Arts and Media. In September 2025 the school was dedicated as the Charlotte Thompson Suhler School of Journalism and Advertising. It is one of five ACEJMC-accredited journalism programs in Illinois and publishes the student newspaper the Daily Egyptian. The school is also affiliated with the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.
Southern Illinois Normal University was chartered by the Illinois General Assembly on 9 March 1869 as the second state-supported normal school in Illinois. A cornerstone-laying ceremony was held in Carbondale on 17 May 1870, but construction delays and the accidental death of a contractor postponed the opening until 1874, when the first session enrolled 53 students under eight faculty members. The institution was renamed Southern Illinois University in 1947 and awarded its first doctorate in 1959.
