The National Library of Somaliland, also known as the Silanyo National Library, is the first and largest national library in Somaliland. It was founded in December 2017 and named after Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (Silanyo), the former President of Somaliland who inaugurated the library. The library was established through the initiative of Ahmed Dahir Elmi, who has served as its Director, with support from the Government of Somaliland.
The library is located in the center of Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, on Road No. 1, Taardheer, behind the Ministry of Telecommunications. Since its opening, more than 4,000 people have visited monthly, including through a dedicated children's section.
The Silanyo National Library houses a collection of local literature, historical documents, and materials in Somali, Arabic, and English relating to Somali culture and the history of Somaliland. It serves school pupils, teachers, university students, and members of the general public.
The library plays a vital cultural and educational role in Somaliland, providing access to reading materials in a region where public library services have historically been limited. It hosts events and educational activities, including literacy celebrations and quiz competitions for school children. It has received support from international organizations including Book Aid International.
The library is open to the public and maintains a Facebook page at facebook.com/SilanyoNLibrary.
