Sherubtse Library OPAC (Sherubtse College, Royal University of Bhutan)

Overview

The Sherubtse Library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) is the digital catalogue of the library of Sherubtse College, the oldest institution of higher education in Bhutan. Sherubtse College is a constituent college of the Royal University of Bhutan, located in Kanglung, Trashigang district, in eastern Bhutan. The library supports the academic and research activities of the college.

History and Founding

Sherubtse College was established as a public school in 1968, following the laying of the foundation stone by the Third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, in June 1966. The school was named Sherubtse, meaning 'peak of learning.' It became a junior college in 1976 and was formally constituted as a constituent college of the Royal University of Bhutan in 2003. The college library has grown alongside the institution, supporting its multidisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.

Collections and Holdings

The Sherubtse Library holds collections across all subject areas taught at the college, including English, history, geography, environmental studies, economics, Dzongkha, computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, zoology, botany, and political science. The OPAC system, powered by Koha open-source library software, provides searchable access to the library's holdings. The library also maintains notable items of interest, including reference copies of MIT's photographic book documenting Bhutan.

Access and Usage

The OPAC is accessible online, allowing students, faculty, and external researchers to search the library's catalogue. Physical access to the library is available to members of Sherubtse College and, in certain cases, to visiting researchers. The college is located approximately 10 minutes from Yonphula Domestic Airport.
