Shari Veil has served as dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communications since July 2020. She came to Nebraska from the University of Kentucky, where she was associate dean for undergraduate affairs and chair of the Department of Communication in the College of Communication and Information, overseeing more than 1,900 undergraduate students. Before Kentucky, she directed the Center for Risk and Crisis Management at the University of Oklahoma. Veil's research on organizational learning in high-risk environments, community preparedness and crisis communication has been supported by more than $1.9 million in grants and has resulted in more than 80 scholarly publications. She holds a Ph.D. in communication with a focus on risk and crisis communication from North Dakota State University, an MBA in marketing and a B.S. in communication from the University of Mary, and spent eight years working in the communication profession before entering academia.
