SANParks Herbaria and Biological Reference Collections (Scientific Services)

Overview

The SANParks Herbaria and Biological Reference Collections are a network of specialized botanical and biological reference collections maintained by South African National Parks (SANParks) through its Scientific Services division. These collections support biodiversity research, conservation monitoring, and management across South Africa's network of national parks. Institutional Background

SANParks is the statutory body responsible for managing South Africa's 20 national parks, covering approximately 4 million hectares. Its Conservation Services Division includes Scientific Services, which conducts the bulk of SANParks' research and monitoring in biophysical and social sciences. Scientific Services generates knowledge that informs park management and promotes the conservation of biodiversity, landscapes, and associated heritage assets.

Collections and Holdings

SANParks maintains several park-specific herbaria and biological reference collections. The Garden Route National Park (GRNP) Herbarium, based in Knysna and established in 1998, holds approximately 2,900 vouchers representing over 1,430 plant species from the park's diverse vegetation types, including forest, fynbos, and thicket. The Kimberley SANParks Herbarium (KSAN) is another collection within the network. Biological reference collections complement the herbaria by housing fauna specimens used for species identification and scientific study. These collections support long-term ecological research, plant species monitoring, and the documentation of biodiversity change within protected areas.

Access and Usage

Herbaria within the SANParks network are open to researchers registered with SANParks. Plant identification services are available. Loans of specimens to other herbaria can be arranged, and exchange of duplicate material may also be possible. Public viewing may be arranged by prior appointment at some locations.
