The Research Library & Archives at History San José is one of California's largest regional history repositories, preserving more than 5,000 linear feet of materials documenting the Santa Clara Valley and beyond. Operated by History San José, a nonprofit organization, in partnership with the City of San José, the archives serves researchers, journalists, genealogists, and the general public from its facility at the Collection Center on Senter Road.
History San José's collections trace their origins to the early stewardship of the City of San José's historical materials. In 1998, the City purchased the former Beechnut Building on Senter Road, which was renovated into a 40,000-square-foot Collection Center housing offices, reading rooms, and two dedicated storage rooms. In 2006, a federal grant matched by community donations allowed the Archives and Library to relocate from the Pacific Hotel in History Park to the Collection Center, consolidating previously dispersed holdings.
The Research Library & Archives holds over 5,000 linear feet of archival records including family papers, personal papers, corporate records, organizational records, maps, architectural drawings, oral histories, ephemera, postcards, films, and municipal records. The photographic collection numbers more than 70,000 images. A large portion of the holdings are searchable through the institution's online catalog, with finding aids also published on the Online Archive of California (OAC). Audiovisual materials are made accessible through the Internet Archive and YouTube.
The archives holds newspaper collections, press photographs, and organizational records from media and civic groups operating in the Santa Clara Valley. The photographic archive includes press and documentary images spanning the region's agricultural, technological, and civic history.
Research visits are by appointment only; same-day appointments are not available due to staff limitations. Researchers can contact the archives at research@historysanjose.org. Historic images are available for licensing through the institution's Zenfolio platform. The institution's catalog is available online at historysanjose.catalogaccess.com.
