Use of DataThe San Francisco Standard launched in 2021 as a responsive online news organization. The Standard, based in San Francisco CA, claims to be committed to shaping the future of local news, and providing relevant coverage tailored to the needs of readers in the Digital Age. The organization’s funding is backed, in part, by Michael Moritz, a billionaire venture capitalist long-associated with Sequoia Capital.
Originally known as Here/Say Media, the organization was a project of Civic Action Labs, a 501(c)4 nonprofit. In March 2021, Here/Say Media disclosed its funding source as Crankstart, a foundation supported by Michael Moritz and Harriet Heyman. In August 2021, Here/Say transitioned into an independent, for-profit entity, with investments of $10 million from Moritz and Heyman. In November 2021, renaming it The San Francisco Standard.
The San Francisco Standard offers several newsletter subscriptions: the daily newsletter, lunch break newsletter, and weekly newsletter. Readers can subscribe by providing their email address and choosing their preferred topics of coverage.
The Standard was a finalist for two Online News Association awards in 2022, including general excellence in online news.
