San Francisco Public Press founded in 2009 by Michael Stoll and Lila LaHood, is a digital news site based in San Francisco, California. It is known for independent, investigative reporting. It has published a quarterly newspaper, but that is currently on hold. Along with the digital site, they also produce “Civic,” a radio program (KSFP, 102.5 FM) and podcast.
Whether in print, audio, or online, the San Francisco Public Press focuses on under-served communities such as those affected by the drug overdose crisis or those who are unhoused. They are funded through national and local foundations and thousands of individuals.
This organization promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging within its staff, and through its journalism and community engagement.
The Society of Professional Journalists awarded the Public Press a 2010 award for Excellence in Explanatory Journalism for a series of reports about plans to San Francisco’s development plans for Treasure Island. In 2021, the Public Press received four 1st place awards from The San Francisco Press Club.
