La Jolla, San Diego, California, USA
UC San Diego has no dedicated journalism school or department. Journalism-adjacent coursework is offered through the Department of Communication, which awards a Bachelor of Arts in two majors: the general Communication major and the Media Industries and Communication major, plus graduate study.
The Department of Communication draws on anthropology, cognitive science, political science, sociology, and the humanities to study communication as a cultural, institutional, technological, and cognitive phenomenon. The Media Industries and Communication major focuses specifically on cultural industries and media systems literacy. Course content addressing news, comparative media systems, and political economy of mass communication is taught within these majors rather than through a separate journalism curriculum.
UC San Diego was established in 1959. Its Department of Communication offers undergraduate and graduate study in communication and media, without a standalone journalism program.
