Samtse College of Education is Bhutan's oldest teacher education institution, founded on 29 May 1968 as the Teacher Training Institute by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third king of Bhutan. The institution began with 41 students and a small faculty. It was renamed the National Institute of Education in 1983 (some sources say 1984) and again renamed Samtse College of Education in 2003 when it became a constituent college of the newly established Royal University of Bhutan. The college offers bachelor's, postgraduate diploma, and master's degree programmes in teacher education across multiple disciplines including science, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, IT, and commerce.
The SCE Library holds collections in support of the college's academic programmes in education, spanning pedagogical theory and practice, Bhutanese culture and heritage, Buddhism, sciences, humanities, languages, and social sciences. The library is affiliated with the Royal University of Bhutan library system. Physical access is available to students and faculty of the college; online catalog access is available at library.sce.edu.bt.
The Koha-based online catalog is accessible to all users at library.sce.edu.bt for searching the library's holdings. On-site access to physical materials is restricted to registered members of the Samtse College of Education community.
