Use of DataThe SAEON Observations Database (observations.saeon.ac.za) is a repository of long-term environmental and ecological observation data managed by the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON). SAEON is a research platform funded by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF). Established in 2002, SAEON operates as South Africa's national platform for detecting, translating, and predicting environmental change through scientifically designed observation systems and research.
SAEON was established in 2002 following a national science meeting in 1999 at which a large number of stakeholders endorsed the creation of a South African Long-Term Ecological Research network, itself inspired by the International Long-Term Ecological Research (ILTER) initiative from 1996. South African government departments approved the establishment of SAEON under NRF management, with the Department of Science and Technology providing core funding as of 2002. SAEON has a distributed network of seven research nodes covering South Africa's major terrestrial and marine ecosystems, plus three large research infrastructures and a national office in Pretoria.
The Observations Database captures and makes long-term environmental datasets freely accessible to users. Data spans a wide range of South African ecosystem types: savanna (Ndlovu Node), coastal and inshore systems (Elwandle Node), marine environments (Egagasini Node), the Cape Floristic Kingdom (Fynbos Node), arid lands (Arid Lands Node), and grasslands, forests, and wetlands (Grasslands-Forests-Wetlands Node). The database includes time-series data on biodiversity, hydrology, climate, and ecological processes, including the Jonkershoek hydrological observation system, whose data spans more than seven decades. SAEON also manages the Shallow Marine and Coastal Research Infrastructure (SMCRI) and the Expanded Freshwater and Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (EFTEON).
Data in the SAEON Observations Database is freely accessible online for scientific research and decision-making. The database supports researchers, government agencies, conservation bodies, and educational institutions. SAEON also runs an education-outreach programme alongside its core observation and data management activities.
