The SAAO/SALT Data Archive (ssda.saao.ac.za) is the official repository for astronomical observational data collected by the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Managed by the SAAO, which is South Africa's national optical observatory and a National Facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF), the archive provides access to a growing body of astronomical data for use by the international research community.
The SAAO was established in January 1972 through a joint agreement between the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of South Africa and the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) of the United Kingdom, merging the Republic Observatory in Johannesburg with the older Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope—the first scientific institution in Africa, founded in 1820. SAAO's headquarters are located on the grounds of the old Royal Observatory in Observatory, Cape Town. The Sutherland observing site in the Northern Cape has hosted major telescopes since the early 1970s.
The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), inaugurated in November 2005, is the largest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, with a 9.2-metre effective aperture. SALT is owned by an international consortium and operated in fully queue-scheduled mode by the SAAO. Full science operations began in late 2011. SALT's first-generation instruments—SALTICAM (imaging camera), the Robert Stobie Spectrograph (RSS), and the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS)—generate the bulk of the data archived in the SAAO/SALT Data Archive. More than 500 refereed scientific papers have been published based on SALT data since first light.
The SAAO/SALT Data Archive provides an online interface for astronomers and researchers to search, retrieve, and download observational data. Access policies follow standard astronomical data-sharing conventions, including proprietary periods after which data becomes publicly available. The archive supports ongoing research in stellar physics, galactic structure, quasars, transient phenomena, exoplanets, and more.
