Missouri House of Representatives - Former State Representative
Gary W. Rust (1935-2025) founded Rust Communications in 1967 with the purchase of the Weekly Bulletin, a small newspaper in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri. A native of Cape Girardeau, he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in retailing from Washington University in St. Louis in 1957 and initially worked in his family's furniture retailing business before entering the newspaper industry. He purchased the Dexter Statesman in 1982, the Southeast Missourian from Thomson Newspapers in 1986, the Daily Dunklin Democrat of Kennett in 1989, and the Daily American Republic of Poplar Bluff in 1990. In 1993 he incorporated these and other holdings as Rust Communications, which grew under his leadership to several dozen newspaper properties across eight states and interests in nearly 20 radio stations. Rust retired from day-to-day operations in February 2001, after which his sons Jon K. Rust and Rex D. Rust were named co-presidents; he remained chairman of the board until near the end of his life. He also served as a Missouri state representative. He was inducted into the Missouri Press Association's Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2003 and received the Suburban Newspapers of America's Dean Lesher Award (1999) and the Inland Press Association's Ralph D. Casey Award (2002). Southeast Missouri State University's Rust Center for Media is named in his honor. He died January 5, 2025, at age 89.
