The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is a national private foundation dedicated to health and health equity in the United States. It funds research, community initiatives, policy work, evaluation, and other efforts intended to remove barriers to health.
The foundation was created in 1936 as the Johnson New Brunswick Foundation by Robert Wood Johnson II, then president and chairman of Johnson & Johnson. It became a national philanthropy under the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation name in 1972.
RWJF combines grantmaking with research, evaluation, policy analysis, advocacy support, and impact investing. Its public resources include active and upcoming opportunities, awarded-grant records, and a substantial library of foundation-supported research.
Applicants use the active-funding-opportunities page and follow the eligibility, deadline, budget, and submission requirements for each call. The foundation also publishes a grant-process guide. Availability changes by program; the central opportunities page should be checked before preparing an application.
Richard Besser, MD, is President and Chief Executive Officer. He joined the foundation in 2017 after serving as acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and as chief health and medical editor at ABC News.
