Robert Lewis Allbritton, born February 16, 1969, is an American media executive who founded Politico in 2007 and led it as publisher and owner until its 2021 sale to the German publisher Axel Springer SE for more than $1 billion. A native of Houston, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in government from Wesleyan University in 1992. He joined his family's Allbritton Communications Company, which owned several ABC-affiliated television stations in Washington, D.C., and served as its chairman and CEO. From 2001 to 2005 he was the final CEO of Riggs National Corporation, the parent of Riggs Bank, succeeding his father; during his tenure, federal investigators found Riggs had failed to properly monitor accounts linked to foreign officials, including funds connected to former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, and the bank was acquired by PNC Bank in 2005 amid the ensuing money laundering scandal, with the Allbritton family agreeing to pay $1 million to a fund for victims of crimes against humanity during Pinochet's rule. Allbritton remained publisher of Politico following the Axel Springer sale and, in 2023, established the Allbritton Journalism Institute with a $20 million grant, a nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to training early-career political journalists through a two-year paid fellowship program. He is also the founder of NOTUS, a news website produced by fellows of the institute, and serves as executive chairman of Perpetual Capital Partners, a private middle-market investment firm based in Arlington, Virginia. He serves on the board of directors of the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation and is a Trustee Emeritus of Wesleyan University.
