Rhodes University is a public research university in Makhanda (Grahamstown), Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) is housed in the Africa Media Matrix Building. The school offers a Bachelor of Journalism and Media Studies (BJourn), a BA with journalism and media studies coursework, Honours and Masters degrees in Journalism and Media Studies, a PhD, a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism, a Postgraduate Diploma in Economic Journalism, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management. JMS marked its 50th anniversary in 2022, dating its founding to 1972.
Rhodes University was founded on 31 May 1904 as Rhodes University College by an act of the Cape Colony parliament, funded through a grant of De Beers preference shares from the Rhodes Trust arranged by Cape Colony politician Leander Starr Jameson. The college opened in 1904 with founding professors drawn from St Andrew's College, Grahamstown, and moved to the Drostdy building in 1905. It became a constituent college of the University of South Africa in 1918 and an independent university in 1951.
