Columbus, Indiana, USA
The Republic is a daily newspaper covering Columbus, Indiana, and nearby communities in Bartholomew and Jennings counties. It is owned by AIM Media Indiana, a subsidiary of AIM Media.
Founded April 4, 1872, by Isaac T. Brown as the weekly Columbus Republican. It converted to daily publication Nov. 12, 1877, as the Daily Evening Republican, later shortened to The Evening Republican; the name shortened again to The Republic in January 1967. The Brown family ran the paper for six generations, expanding it into a regional chain, Home News Enterprises, that added the Daily Journal in Johnson County (1963), the Brown County Democrat (2002) and The Tribune of Jackson County (2012). In November 2015, the Brown family sold Home News Enterprises to AIM Media Indiana LLC, an affiliate of AIM Media Texas LLC, ending 143 years of local family ownership. The paper's landmark 1971 office building, designed by Myron Goldsmith of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, was named a National Historic Landmark in 2012; the paper relocated to 2980 N. National Road in 2016, and the old building later became home to Indiana University's J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program.
Won the Kent Cooper Award from the Indiana Associated Press in 2009 for community service following a major flood. Its April 2021 investigative series "Drugs, Guns and Money" examined "Operation Columbus Day," described as the largest multi-agency drug trafficking probe in county history.
