Overview

The Repositorio Institucional de la UNAM (RI-UNAM) is the principal open-access online portal for digital content produced and preserved by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). It serves as a unified, integrating platform for the university's diverse repositories and digital collections, enabling cross-collection searching and broad dissemination of scholarly output.

History and Founding

The concept of a unified institutional repository for UNAM was first proposed around 2010, with a programme for migration to electronic format initiated in 2011. The RI-UNAM was formally created on 19 August 2019 by an accord signed by Rector Enrique Graue Wiechers and published in the Gaceta UNAM. It is administered by the Dirección General de Repositorios Universitarios (DGRU). A Technical Committee was installed on 3 September 2019.

Collections and Holdings

At launch, the RI-UNAM incorporated approximately 2.7 million digital resources from existing UNAM platforms, including: TESIUNAM (theses), Revistas UNAM (academic journals), Biblioteca Nacional Digital de México, Hemeroteca Nacional Digital de México, educational resources, and digitised university collections. The repository integrates content from dozens of university entities, including faculties, research institutes, and coordination offices. Notable subcollections include digitised incunabula (books printed up to the early 16th century) held by the Biblioteca y Hemeroteca Nacional Digital de México, as well as extensive holdings in humanities, sciences, social sciences, and law.

Access and Usage

The RI-UNAM is freely accessible at repositorio.unam.mx. Users can search across all collections or within specific repositories, filtering by contributing entity, year, content type, and subject area. All content carries Creative Commons licences to standardise attribution and reuse conditions.
