Repositori Ilmiah Nasional BRIN Dataverse (RIN)

Overview

The Repositori Ilmiah Nasional (RIN), or National Scientific Repository, is Indonesia's national open research data platform operated by the National Research and Innovation Agency (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, BRIN). The platform enables Indonesian researchers and institutions to store, preserve, cite, analyze, and share research data, fulfilling a mandate established under Indonesian law.

History and Founding

RIN was initiated in 2015 by the Centre for Scientific Data and Documentation (PDDI) of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), using the open-source Dataverse Network platform developed by IQSS at Harvard University. The platform's development was formalized by Indonesian Law No. 11/2019 on the National System for Science and Technology, which requires the deposit of scientific data produced in government-funded research. Following the merger of Indonesian research agencies into BRIN in 2021, the platform was consolidated under BRIN's Directorate of Repository, Multimedia, and Scientific Publishing Affairs.

Collections and Holdings

RIN provides a federated data repository for Indonesian research across all scientific disciplines, from natural sciences and biodiversity to social sciences and humanities. The platform is organized into institutional dataverses for participating research agencies and universities, and includes datasets from a wide range of BRIN research centers. Notable applications include its role as the data repository for the Indonesian National Health System Consortium during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Access and Usage

The platform is accessible at data.brin.go.id. Researchers may register individually or through institutional partnerships. Datasets can be designated as open access, moderated access, or closed access, with DOIs assigned for citability. Long-term data storage is guaranteed for periods of 5 to 20 years in compliance with Indonesian science law.
