Raul Reis is dean of the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a position he has held since July 2022. A native of Belem, Brazil, he earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications from the Universidade Federal do Para, a master's degree in journalism and mass communication from Kansas State University, and a Ph.D. in communication and society from the University of Oregon. Before entering academia, Reis worked for many years as a newspaper, television and magazine reporter and editor for Brazilian and U.S. news organizations, covering politics, sports, city news, and science and the environment. In 1997 he developed and began teaching the first journalism and media courses at California State University, Monterey Bay, and he later chaired the journalism department at California State University, Long Beach. He went on to serve as dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University (2011-2016) and dean of the School of Communication at Emerson College (2016-2022) before joining UNC Hussman. He also serves as president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.
