The Pustaka Dewan Bahasa eLib eBook Portal is the digital library platform of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), Malaysia's government body responsible for coordinating the Malay language and Malay-language literature. The portal, accessible at dbp.elib.com.my, provides online access to DBP's growing collection of digital publications, primarily in the Malay language.
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka was originally established as Balai Pustaka on 22 June 1956 in Johor Bahru under the then-Malayan Ministry of Education. Following the Third Malay Language and Literature Congress held in Singapore and Johor Bahru in September 1956, the institution was renamed Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. It relocated to Kuala Lumpur in 1957, and its statutory basis was formalized through the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Ordinance of 1959, which granted DBP a charter and its own Board of Governors. On 31 January 1962, DBP moved into its dedicated building on Jalan Dewan Bahasa. Since then, it has expanded across Malaysia with offices in Bukit Mertajam, Kota Bharu, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching.
DBP publishes a broad range of materials in the Malay language, including encyclopaedias, dictionaries (most notably the Kamus Dewan), magazines and journals, primary and secondary school textbooks, academic works on Malay language and literature, and books for general readership of all ages. The eLib portal provides digital access to a curated selection of these publications, organized by category and available for online borrowing or reading by registered users.
The eLib portal is accessible to registered users via https://dbp.elib.com.my/. Users may browse the catalogue, borrow eBooks, and read them online. The platform includes guides for borrowing and reading eBooks. Registration is required to borrow titles.
DBP's publishing output includes periodicals and reference works that have long served as primary sources for Malay-language journalism and media. The Kamus Dewan functions as both a descriptive and prescriptive dictionary, shaping usage across media and official communications. DBP's role in standardizing orthography, coining technical terminology, and promoting Malay literature has made it an essential institution for researchers and media practitioners working in the Malay language.
