Washington, D.C., USA
Punchbowl News is a membership-based news outlet covering Washington power, people and politics, with a particular focus on Congress. Its name references the U.S. Secret Service codename for the Capitol.
Punchbowl News launched January 3-6, 2021, founded by Politico alumni Jake Sherman and Anna Palmer, co-authors of the Politico Playbook newsletter and the 2019 bestseller The Hill to Die On, along with co-founder John Bresnahan, a veteran Capitol Hill reporter, and Rachel Schindler, formerly of Facebook's news team. Initial funding of $1 million was arranged by media banker Aryeh Bourkoff of Kindred Media. Within 72 hours of launch, the January 6 Capitol riot occurred while Sherman and Bresnahan were reporting from inside the building. Punchbowl, Inc., a Massachusetts greeting card company, sued for trademark infringement in February 2021; Punchbowl News prevailed at summary judgment and again on appeal to the Ninth Circuit. In December 2023, Punchbowl News acquired Electo Analytics, a legislative-data analysis company.
