The Presidential Archives of the Republic of Korea (대통령기록관) is the official institution responsible for the collection, preservation, management, and exhibition of presidential records produced by successive South Korean governments. Located in Sejong City, it operates under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and serves as both a public archive and an exhibition hall dedicated to the history of South Korea's presidency.
The Presidential Archives was established pursuant to the Act on the Management of Presidential Records, which governs the collection, classification, preservation, and utilization of all documents, photographs, audio-visual materials, and artifacts produced during presidential administrations. The facility in Sejong City, designed in the form of a box for the national great seal (a symbolic reference to official authority), formally relocated to its current location and commenced full operations in November of the year of its move. Its four-story exhibition hall presents records from South Korea's first president, Syngman Rhee, elected in 1948, through subsequent administrations.
The archive holds presidential records spanning all administrations of the Republic of Korea, including official documents, photographs, video recordings, diplomatic correspondence, gifts from foreign dignitaries, and personal items. Notable exhibits include materials from the Cheong Wa Dae (Blue House) presidential compound, which served as the seat of the presidency for 74 years before being opened to the public in 2022. The archive also preserves records acquired from private individuals and organizations in possession of historically significant presidential materials. As of late 2023, the archive held millions of individual items across multiple format categories.
The Presidential Archives is open to the public and offers guided exhibitions, a children's experience hall, a video theater, and a specialized reading room for researchers, policy makers, and former presidents. It periodically hosts special exhibitions drawing on specific collections or presidential periods. The facility also offers online access to digitized records through its official portal.
