Positive News is a British constructive-journalism media brand, publishing solutions-focused reporting online and in a quarterly print magazine, structured as a reader-owned community benefit society.
Positive News was founded in 1993 in Shropshire, England, by Shauna Crockett-Burrows as a free quarterly newspaper, reaching a circulation of 50,000 volunteer-distributed copies by 1995. Following Crockett-Burrows's death in 2012, director Seán Wood relocated the organization to London in 2013 amid financial difficulty. In 2015, Positive News completed a crowdfunded "community share offer" that raised £263,000 and converted it into the world's first crowdfunded global media cooperative, owned by roughly 1,500 co-owners across 33 countries; the magazine relaunched in its current form in 2016.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Positive News crowdfunded £15,000 to distribute 9,000 copies of its magazine to NHS workers, and it has operated as a fully remote organization since.
CEO: Seán Dagan Wood, who joined as a journalist in 2009, became editor-in-chief in 2012, publisher in 2018, and CEO in 2020
Positive News reaches an annual audience of more than 3 million across digital channels, a weekly newsletter with roughly 83,000 subscribers, and a quarterly carbon-neutral print magazine with about 10,000 paying subscribers.
