Portland Press Herald is a daily newspaper based in South Portland, Maine, with statewide readership and the most distributed newspaper in the state. It is published by the Maine Trust for Local News.
The Portland Daily Press was founded in June 1862. Guy P. Gannett merged the Press with the Portland Herald to form the Portland Press Herald, first published Nov. 21, 1921. Gannett built the Press Herald Building at 390 Congress Street in 1923; the building later became the Press Hotel. For most of the 20th century the paper anchored Guy Gannett Communications, sold to The Seattle Times Company in 1998, MaineToday Media in 2009, Masthead Maine in 2015, and the nonprofit National Trust for Local News in 2023, which operates it as the Maine Trust for Local News.
Investigative reporter Colin Woodard won a George Polk Award in 2012 and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2016. Reporters Whit Richardson and Steve Mistler won a 2016 Gerald Loeb Award for their series "Payday at the Mill."
