The Archivo Histórico Javeriano (AHJ), formally known as the Archivo Histórico Javeriano Juan Manuel Pacheco S.J., is the institutional historical archive and memory center of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. It is named in honor of Father Juan Manuel Pacheco S.J., a distinguished Jesuit historian and researcher whose personal documents, manuscripts, photographs, and publications provided the founding nucleus of the collection. The archive was established in 1996 and operates as an administrative unit with academic objectives, attached to the Secretary General of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana.
The Pontificia Universidad Javeriana is one of Colombia's oldest and most prestigious universities, founded by the Society of Jesus in 1623 in Bogotá. After the Jesuit expulsion in 1767 forced its closure, the university was re-established in 1930. The Archivo Histórico Javeriano was created in 1996 to systematically collect, preserve, and disseminate the historical memory and cultural patrimony of the institution in its capacity both as a higher education institution and as a work of the Society of Jesus in Colombia. The archive is named after Father Juan Manuel Pacheco S.J. in recognition of his contributions to Javeriana and to Jesuit historiography in Colombia.
The archive holds documents pertaining to the founding, administration, and academic life of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, as well as the broader history of the Society of Jesus in Colombia. Collections include administrative records, personal papers, manuscripts, photographs, printed publications, and research materials. The archive forms part of the General Archives System of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and serves as its technical secretariat. It also houses digitized records related to the Colegio San Bartolomé, a Jesuit institution closely linked to the university's early history.
The archive provides access to its holdings for members of the university community and the general public upon request. Services include guided visits, academic internships, and personalized research assistance. It is housed in the Edificio Pedro Arrupe S.J. on the Bogotá campus. The archive has been undertaking digitization projects to expand online access to its collections.
