Overview

The PIB Archives is the official online archive of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India, containing digitized press releases, photographs, and other documents issued by the Indian government from 1947 onward. The Photo Gallery section specifically provides access to government-issued photographs archived by PIB's Photo Division, now a constituent part of PIB.

History and Founding

The Press Information Bureau was established in the 1930s under British colonial administration, though archival records accessible online begin from India's independence in 1947. For decades, press releases were produced and stored as printed paper documents. Between 2015 and 2018, PIB undertook a major digitization project to convert these fragile historical records into digital format; the physical volumes were subsequently transferred to the National Archives of India, and the digital versions were made available on the PIB website. From 2004 onward, photographs released by the Photo Division are also archived in the system.

Collections and Holdings

The PIB Archives contains three main periods of records: press releases from 1947 to 2001 (comprising approximately 333,000 press releases in scanned PDF format); releases from 2002–2003; and content from 2004 onward in dynamic digital format including press releases, photographs, PM visit records, cabinet decisions, and backgrounders. The Photo Gallery includes official photographs of government events, state functions, prime ministerial activities, and ceremonial occasions organized by ministry and date.

For journalism researchers and historians, the PIB Archives provides a comprehensive record of official government communications across eight decades. It documents the evolution of India's public information apparatus from the post-independence period and offers an authoritative primary source for political, economic, and social history. The archives are fully searchable by keyword, ministry, and date range from 2004 onward, with keyword search also available for earlier digitized records.

Access and Usage

The PIB Archives is freely accessible online. Content from 1947 to 2001 is searchable by year, month, and ministry, or via text-based keyword search. Advanced search functionality is available for content from 2003 onward. The portal is hosted by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).
