Biography

Phan Van Kien (Phan Văn Kiền) is director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication Training at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, part of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH), a position he was appointed to in November 2022. The institute, established in 1990 as successor to the university's Faculty of Journalism, offers undergraduate programs in journalism, high-quality journalism, and public relations, along with master's and doctoral programs, and is one of two institutions in Vietnam offering a doctoral program in journalism studies. Kien's research focuses on journalism theory, online journalism and public-sphere discourse, and the digital transformation of the press, with published work examining social critique and public debate on Vietnamese news sites such as Tuoi Tre and VnExpress. He is co-author, with Bui Chi Trung and Nguyen Ba, of Chuyển đổi số báo chí - Một số vấn đề lý luận và thực tiễn (Digital Transformation of Journalism: Theoretical and Practical Issues), published by the National Political Publishing House Su That in 2022.
