Use of DataThe People's Archive of Rural India (PARI) was founded in December 2014 by veteran journalist Palagummi Sainath, former Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu and winner of over 50 national and international awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award (2007). Sainath conceived PARI as both a living journal and an archive to document the extraordinary diversity of rural India — its occupations, languages, cultures, songs, and livelihoods — before they disappear. PARI is operated by the non-profit CounterMedia Trust, based in Mumbai, and does not accept government or corporate funding, relying on volunteer labor and individual donations.
PARI focuses on rural journalism and documents the everyday lives of approximately 833 million rural Indians across diverse categories including farming, Adivasi communities, Dalit communities, women, healthcare, environmental issues, and the rural dimensions of urban areas. Stories are published in up to 13 Indian languages through a team of volunteers nationwide. The archive has been described as a "Smithsonian from below" for its focus on documenting traditional ways of life, and has won more than 90 journalism awards since its launch.
PARI's holdings include text reportage, photo essays, video and audio recordings, and a curated library of reports, rare documents, and research materials. Special collections include the Grindmill Songs Project — the world's largest database of songs composed and sung by rural women in Indian languages — as well as Adivasi children's paintings and Kachchhi songs. The archive also hosts the only systematic record of India's last living freedom fighters. A PARI Library provides access to official and independent reports, out-of-print books, rare documents, and peer-reviewed research for students and researchers.
All content is freely accessible online at ruralindiaonline.org and licensed under Creative Commons for non-commercial use. PARI encourages integration of its content into academic curricula and has partnerships with district newspapers in Karnataka and several national media platforms.
