Penguin Random House is a trade book publishing group headquartered in New York City. The company was formed in 2013 through the merger of Random House and Penguin. Penguin Random House comprises more than 300 individual publishing imprints operating across 21 countries on six continents.
Penguin Random House is wholly owned by Bertelsmann, a German media, services, and education company. Bertelsmann and Pearson formed Penguin Random House in 2013 by combining Random House and Penguin, with Bertelsmann holding a majority stake from the outset. Bertelsmann acquired Pearson's remaining 25 percent stake in Penguin Random House for $675 million in a deal announced in December 2019 and completed in 2020, making Bertelsmann the sole owner.
Penguin Random House was formed in 2013 by combining Bertelsmann's Random House and Pearson's Penguin. Bertelsmann became the company's sole owner in 2020. In 2021, Penguin Random House's proposed acquisition of Simon & Schuster was investigated by regulators; the deal was later blocked and did not close.
