Shubhanga Pandey is Nepali writer, editor and historian-in-training. Mr. Pandey served as the chief editor of Himal Southasian from 2020 to 2022. He had previously accepted an internship at Himal Southasian during a summer home from college, but chose a leave of absence from school for three years to stay on as an assistant editor. In 2016, Mr. Pandey's last year at school, Himal Southasian was facing challenges from the Nepali government and ended up relocating from Kathmandu to Sri Lanka. He returned to the magazine publication as deputy editor in 2018, and took over as chief editor during Covid-19, leading Himal Southasian in its mission to represent the Himalayan region, from Afghanistan to Burma, as a connected culture. His writings have appeared in World Politics Review, the Caravan, Jacobin, Newslaundry, and the London Review of Books blog. Mr. Pandey is currently doing his PhD in History at University of California, Los Angeles, focusing on histories of information, knowledge and social technologies. His work looks at how and why different historical actors pursue activities like surveying, data collecting, reporting, mapping, archiving, compiling and chronicling. His present area of focus is state formation and diplomacy in South Asia during the 18th and 19th centuries.
