OpenMETU is the official institutional repository and open science archive of Middle East Technical University (METU / ODTÜ), located in Çankaya, Ankara, Turkey. The platform provides free internet access to the scientific and academic output produced by METU, including research articles, book chapters, conference papers, theses, dissertations, datasets, software, and presentations, without financial, legal, or technical barriers.
METU's commitment to open access has deep roots: the university's postgraduate electronic thesis archive, launched in 2003 by the Department of Library and Documentation, was the first open-access system of its kind in Turkey. OpenMETU was built on this infrastructure, expanded to encompass the full range of METU's academic output. The official opening ceremony of OpenMETU was held on December 20, 2019, alongside the METU Open Science Conference. METU published its Open Science Policy in 2019, and OpenMETU was formally registered in the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) in October 2020. The system is built on DSpace software and complies with OpenAIRE PubRepos v4.0 standards.
OpenMETU's collections are organized into communities corresponding to METU's faculties, institutions, research centres, and the Northern Cyprus campus, with sub-communities for departments. Content types include journal articles (pre-prints, post-prints, and publisher versions), theses and dissertations, book chapters, conference papers, research data, and software products. Collections are managed under copyright terms and ethical rules that govern permissible content.
OpenMETU is freely accessible to anyone via open.metu.edu.tr. Graduate students submit theses electronically to OpenMETU; printed copies are no longer accepted. The OAI-PMH interface (https://open.metu.edu.tr/oai) enables metadata harvesting. Researchers and institutions may contact the platform at open@metu.edu.tr for corrections or submissions.
